Kathy Bates was diagnosed with lymphedema, an incurable disorder that affects around 30% of breast cancer survivors, despite her being cancer-free at this point. It is the result of the removal of her lymph nodes. She is really uncomfortable because of the pain and edema she is experiencing.
It’s a keepsake that you most definitely don’t desire. I truly believed that my life was ended. I was so angry for a long time that I didn’t think I would ever be able to work again.
Her whole struggle drove her to share her ailment in public in order to encourage other women to obtain regular checks and know they are not alone in this battle. In addition, Bates became an ambassador for the Lymphatic Education and Research Network (LE&RN).
