The very first one was invented in China , where it was common to use rice paper for hygienic purposes. Rice paper was produced by hand and used by the wealthier classes.
Modern toilet paper was invented in 1857 by an American engineer named Joseph Gayetty . Gayetty created sheets of paper pre-lubricated with aloe and sold them as a hygienic anal cleansing product. However, his product was not very successful and was soon forgotten.
